Vitalik Buterin proposes hard limit on Ethereum proving costs per block gas
Vitalik Buterin has proposed a hard ceiling on Ethereum proving costs per unit of block gas, introducing a resource-accounting test to the push for faster zero-knowledge proofs. The proposal aims to bound prover cost relative to block gas, ensuring that even blocks deliberately assembled to be expensive to prove can be processed within predictable resource limits. As of October 18, the related EIP-7904 is in Last Call with a November 1 deadline, targeting 100 million gas per second on optimized native execution clients. The initiative follows ZKsync's demonstration that one NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell proved 99% of 7,200 consecutive Ethereum mainnet blocks in under 10 seconds each, though a maximum-cost guarantee must account for deliberately difficult workloads that determine reserve hardware capacity.
