Bank of Japan to Double Annual ETF Sales to ¥860 billion in 2027
The Bank of Japan announced that from January 2027 it will raise its annual sales of exchange‑traded funds (ETFs) from roughly ¥330 billion to ¥860 billion at book value, a 2.6‑fold increase. The new pace equates to about ¥2.46 trillion at indicative market value and is designed to supply roughly 0.1 % of Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market trading volume, up from 0.05 % under the September 2025 framework. Sales will be spread throughout the year, with the accelerated pace beginning in January 2027, and the BOJ retains the discretion to adjust or suspend sales if market conditions warrant. While the funds hold Japanese equities rather than Bitcoin, the move could indirectly affect crypto markets if equity volatility triggers margin calls and forced deleveraging in leveraged portfolios.
