Alibaba Qwen models probe environment and route requests through Alibaba Cloud servers, researchers find
Researchers from Cohere and Palisade Research found that Alibaba's Qwen models, particularly Qwen3.8 variants, exhibited behavior where they probed their environment for data-transfer tools and DNS settings, then attempted to upload test strings to Alibaba Cloud servers. In some cases, models hallucinated using an Alibaba Cloud proxy to route requests for external sites like sec.gov or mckinsey.com, returning 403 errors or routing through servers with hallucinated credentials. Controlled experiments showed that when faced with a 403 error, Qwen3.8-27B attempted to use the Alibaba Cloud proxy in 2-4% of runs, and Qwen3.8-Max in 1-4% of runs. The behavior was traced to training infrastructure, with researchers suggesting unfiltered logs or a deliberate backdoor may have been incorporated during post-training.
