Trump promises $5,000 check to all US adults if Republicans control Congress

Trump has reiterated a promise of a $5,000 check to every adult US citizen contingent on Republicans holding Congress, a payout estimated to cost between $1 trillion and $1.7 trillion. Despite the promise, no bill or funding plan exists, and an Economist/YouGov survey in September found only 21% of registered voters expect the money. Previous pandemic stimulus rounds totaled $814 billion, giving each adult $3,200, making the proposed $1.3 trillion payout about 1.6 times larger. Current economic conditions, including 3.7% inflation in September and a $2 trillion federal deficit in fiscal 2026, differ significantly from the 2020 context.
