Lula wins Brazil presidency, defying right-wing surge in Latin America

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been declared the winner of Brazil's 2026 presidential election after a runoff vote. His opponent, Flavio Bolsonaro, refused to accept the result and called for the election to be annulled. Lula's victory breaks a regional trend of right-wing candidates aligned with Donald Trump winning across Latin America.
