OpenAI acquires Pierre Computer Company to improve Git for AI coding agents
OpenAI is acquiring Pierre Computer Company, Inc., the startup behind Code Storage and several open-source tools, on Nov 4, 2026. Pierre's libraries already power OpenAI's coding agent Codex, including Trees for project file navigation, Diffs for viewing and fixing code changes, and Highlights for real-time syntax highlighting as developers or AI agents write code. Code Storage stores code and tracks history through Git. OpenAI said the deal aims to make Git workflows work better when developers and AI agents write code side by side, especially as agents handle more tasks in parallel. OpenAI already operates Pando, its own version control backend for developers and agents. Pierre's open-source projects will remain open source, and the acquisition still requires regulatory approval.
