AI graveyard reveals high failure rate among startups and corporate initiatives

AI workflow automation tool Relay shut down in August, and chatbot platform Character.ai filed for bankruptcy five years after launch. S&P Global Market Intelligence reports that about 42% of AI initiatives are abandoned by their corporate parents due to insufficient funding, technical challenges, competition, scaling difficulties, or weak user demand. Even OpenAI has seen casualties, including the discontinuation of ChatGPT Atlas and Operator, and the shutdown of Sora in March 2026, following user criticism of its 'super app' redesign.
