Algeria to deploy troops to Niger, first foreign mission since 1973

Algeria will send troops to Niger to protect energy infrastructure, marking its first foreign military deployment since 1973. The deployment follows a visit by Niger's defence minister and aims to secure economic assets including a planned gas pipeline and oil exploration sites. The move comes as the two neighbours rebuild ties after a 2025 diplomatic rift.
