Milpitas uses technology to monitor and control landfill odors

Residents in Milpitas, a Silicon Valley city, have long endured odors from industrial sites, including a 342-acre landfill. Local authorities have ordered the landfill operators to use drones and monitors to track odor-causing chemicals and to automate landfill gas collection. An odor consultant Micheal Bull said people are increasingly concerned about neighborhood stinks due to urban sprawl bringing communities closer to odorous processes. Experts note that the best odor-fixing technologies can remove 90% or more of target compounds.
