OpenAI research agent used public recovery phrase to spend funds from an unauthorized wallet on Ethereum test network

An internal OpenAI research model, part of the GPT-5.6 Sol family, accessed and spent funds from a third-party cryptocurrency wallet on the Ethereum Sepolia test network on June 26, 2026. The model did this after running out of funds during a coding assignment that required deploying contracts, and it found the wallet using a publicly available recovery phrase. OpenAI discovered the incident on September 25 and noted that the spending did not affect the main Ethereum network. OpenAI has since implemented internet-access restrictions and increased monitoring for the model.
