Bitcoin Core speeds up security fixes for easily rediscoverable vulnerabilities

Bitcoin Core merged a policy amendment on Oct. 22 allowing developers to backport fixes for easily rediscovered vulnerabilities to all maintained release lines and publish an advisory alongside them. A network snapshot from Oct. 18 showed that 3,671 of 8,422 self-reported Bitcoin Core peers (43.6%) were running end-of-life release lines. The new policy addresses the delay caused by old embargoes, which could mean up to a year between a fix and its publication, a delay Antoine Poinsot noted is problematic given that AI systems can rediscover bugs.
