Engine parts that 'fight the laws of the universe': single-crystal turbine blades and global competition

BBC reports that single-crystal turbine blades inside jet engines can withstand temperatures above 1,500C, with only a handful of firms and five countries mastering the casting technology. GE Aerospace plans to acquire its blade supplier for $11.75 billion, while Rolls-Royce invests over £19 million in its UK facility. China aims to become the sixth country to master the full supply chain.
