Visegrád Group presidents meet in Slovakia, with European Commission president attending for first time
The Visegrád Group presidential summit opened on November 4 in Trenčín, Slovakia, and runs through November 5. Slovak President Peter Pellegrini hosts the meeting, attended by Czech President Petr Pavel, Polish President Karol Nawrocki and Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is also attending, the first time an EU Commission president has taken part in a Visegrád Group presidential summit. Formal talks will be held on November 5 at Trenčín Castle. The agenda covers EU enlargement, Ukraine, energy supply and energy prices, with the aim of reviving the four-country cooperation mechanism and strengthening their collective influence in the EU. The Visegrád Group was founded in February 1991 by Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia, and expanded to four members when the Czech Republic and Slovakia became independent in 1993. Slovakia assumed the group’s rotating presidency on July 1, 2026.
