Tether's QVAC study finds cloud AI access can be cheaper than buying a laptop for local processing
Tether's local AI platform, QVAC, conducted a cost study comparing a $2,399, 32 GB laptop purchase (amortized to about $50 monthly) against cloud API access for the dense Qwen3.8-27B model. Based on an estimated 55 million tokens processed in a 176-hour month, the corresponding cloud API bill is estimated at $35.75, which is less than the monthly hardware charge. The study indicates that for typical usage, buying a new machine does not save money compared to cloud access, unless usage is significantly higher or the user already owns a suitable device. Tether also announced an investment in AI computing company Tenstorrent, which recently closed a $1.5 billion Series E at a $6.2 billion post-money valuation.
