Bitcoin options dominate derivatives market as trading shifts toward risk management

Bitcoin options now account for nearly 60% of total open interest in the cryptocurrency's derivatives market, up from around 50% at the start of 2026. Driven by growth in exchange-traded fund options, particularly BlackRock's IBIT, the total market value of bitcoin derivatives reached approximately $129 billion. This shift reflects a structural change in trading behavior, moving away from simple price speculation toward risk management strategies such as hedging and income generation.
