a16z rebrands from a16z Crypto to a16z Frontier and expands $2.2B fund to include AI and frontier tech

Andreessen Horowitz announced on Oct. 22 that it is renaming a16z Crypto to a16z Frontier and expanding the scope of its $2.2 billion fifth fund beyond crypto startups to companies developing emerging technologies and creating new markets. Managing partner Chris Dixon confirmed the expansion includes technologies beyond blockchain, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence, autonomous machines, and emerging networks connecting people and software agents. Previously, on May 5, a16z crypto stated Fund 5 was "100% dedicated to investing in crypto entrepreneurs," but Dixon argued the crypto label is now too restrictive given blockchain's integration into conventional financial services.
