Alphabet’s Q4 Earnings Show $500 bn Market‑Value Loss as AI‑Driven Search Cuts Ad Revenue
Alphabet reported a 25% rise in quarterly revenue to $127.6 bn, driven largely by Google Cloud’s 103% growth to nearly $31 bn. However, operating profit fell 25%, and the company posted a negative free‑cash‑flow loss of over $9 bn for the first time in its public‑company history. The loss is almost entirely due to spending on Google’s AI‑enhanced search engine, which now delivers AI‑summaries by default. This change has reduced the number of ads shown alongside search results, cutting Alphabet’s core ad‑sales revenue. By Thursday’s close, Alphabet’s market value had dropped from $3.97 trillion to $3.46 trillion, a $500 bn decline, and the stock fell nearly 13%—its second lowest level this year. "Alphabet’s disappointing search business results highlight the challenge of funding massive AI investments while maintaining the strength of established businesses," said Forrester analyst Tracy Woo.
