Stablecoin Cross‑Border Transfers Surge 80% as Banks Shift to Infrastructure Role
Between June 2025 and June 2026, cross‑border stablecoin transfers jumped 80 %, while overall cryptocurrency economic activity fell only 1.6 % from the prior year, according to Chainalysis data presented at MERGE Madrid 2026. Executives from Deutsche Börse’s Crypto Finance Group, Visa, Commerzbank, N26, Applied Blockchain, Western Union, Anchorage Digital, and the Qivalis consortium highlighted that banks are moving beyond trading into building settlement infrastructure, staking, tokenized deposits, and stablecoin‑card settlement that operates 24/7. Visa’s stablecoin card allows institutions to settle obligations every day of the week, and the Qivalis euro‑stablecoin has expanded from nine to 37 banks across 15 countries, aiming to operate under MiCA on public Ethereum. Panelists noted that the main barriers to institutional scale are operational rather than technological, citing people, processes, and governance as key challenges.
