May Job Openings and Hires Unchanged at 7.6 Million and 5.2 Million, BLS Reports

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that in May 2026, the number of job openings remained unchanged at 7.6 million, and hires were unchanged at 5.2 million. Total separations were slightly changed at 5.1 million, with quits at 3.1 million and layoffs and discharges at 1.7 million. The release includes estimates for the total nonfarm sector, by industry, and by establishment size class.
