Amazon Bedrock Enables Cross‑Region Inference of OpenAI GPT Models from Canada
Current overview (not historical)
Amazon has announced that users in the Canada (Central) and Canada West (Calgary) regions can now access OpenAI’s GPT‑5.6, GPT‑6, and GPT‑6.1 series models via cross‑region inference on Amazon Bedrock. The feature leverages AWS’s private backbone network to encrypt traffic, ensuring that Canadian customer data remains in the source region by default. This expansion allows Canadian customers to benefit from OpenAI’s latest models while maintaining data residency and compliance requirements.

- AWS Machine Learning Blog · Oct 21, 00:42AWS Enables Canadian Users to Access OpenAI GPT‑5.6, GPT‑6, and GPT‑6.1 Models via Cross‑Region Inference
AWS now allows organizations in Canada (Central and West Calgary) to invoke OpenAI GPT‑5.6, GPT‑6, and GPT‑6.1 models through Amazon Bedrock’s cross‑region inference. Requests sent to a Bedrock Runtime endpoint in Canada are routed to supported US regions for processing, providing a larger capacity pool and helping sustain throughput during demand spikes. The service supports text and image inputs, a 1‑million‑token context window, tool calling, and prompt caching, and can be accessed via the OpenAI Responses API, Chat Completions API, and Bedrock Converse API.
